Austin, Texas is considering a partial ban on single-use plastic bags. One argument for the ban: plastic in the environment and the problems it causes. More on that in my piece for Austin Culture Map.
I was interested to see the comment re Kenya. I am currently living here, and the reality on the ground is that plastic bags are alive and well - the notion of a ban has been floated, but it has not got up because apparently there are 20,000 workers who would lose their jobs if the factories closed (wouldn't there need to be the same number or more employed making paper bags?).
But I support the thrust of the article wholeheartedly, and am enthusiastically trying to convert the locals to the cause
